This article’s aim is to present the Overseas Historical Archives (AHU) as an indispensable documentary repository for studying Portuguese overseas history and culture as well as those of countries emerging from wherever the Portuguese have settled. A perspective of its documentary funds and collections presents the AHU as a cultural institution with an unmatchable importance for the study of colonial Brazil’s historical sources.
