In this article, we focus on four photographs of the series by Augusto Malta, Rio de Janeiro’s official photographer (1903-1936), dedicated to the kiosks. We intend to observe the tensions therein, since they are simultaneously symbols of actions in the name of civilization and the modernizing project in mayor Pereira Passos’s administration (1902-1906), and the resistant character of Rio’s urban culture.
