This article seeks to draw a general profile of the immigrants in Itu, state of São Paulo, with the focus on their work universe. The analysed period, from 1876 to 1930, corresponds to the period of transition from slave labour to free labour, when the latter was integrated, in large part, in the countryside of São Paulo, till then essencially agricultural.
