The article reviews the trade, circulation and forms of purchase of books and, as a consequence, what was read in Rio de Janeiro during the last decade of the 18th century. This study is based in unpublished documents of the National Archives containing the inventory of José de Sousa Teixeira's shop, where books were sold.
