As elsewhere, inventories are na important souce for the study of private libraries of physicians and lawyers from Rio de Janeiro, at the turn of the 19th to the 20th Century. Their wide-ranging contents witness their importance for the city cultural life. On the other hand, the care their owners bestowed them shows that this libraries had been converted for them into a kind of Garden of Eden.
