In his article the author puts in relief the ideas of ‘modern’ and ‘nation’ in the Brazilian historiography in the time of the scientism. In this context the author has as object of research Capistrano de Abreu's fourth series Ensaios e estudos, which principal topics are the scientism, the historicism, the conception of the historical method and the paper of erudition.
